With Alinghi chasing their seventh victory in this classic race, the 77th edition of the Bol d’Or began in winds that – generously – could be described as light and finished, some 12 hours later, in near-storm conditions. The way that the weather fluctuated mirrored the racing itself, which was full of drama and suspense. It was Team Tilt who crossed the finish line on Lake Geneva in first place, with Alinghi a matter of mere metres and seconds behind them – ultimately unable to reel them back in, but having done an amazing job to be in with a shout at all, doggedly pegging back rival after rival to clamber up the leaderboard and claim second spot on the podium. And it was very close! Ladycat, powered by Spindrift racing, finished in third place and at one stage – indeed for the first half of the race – looked like they might claim victory, having led the fleet almost all the way up to Le Bouveret. All of the teams deserve a huge amount of credit for having done battle with testing and highly variable conditions. The light wind that had characterised the first half of the race gave way tono wind once Alinghi passed the half-way mark in Le Bouveret. That presented one type of challenge, but another entirely was to greet the team when, between Evian and Yvoire, thunderstorms hit, with huge gusts of wind testing the team’s sail handling to the max. That Alinghi did get so close to victory is perhaps even more impressive given that their bowman – Yves Detrey – had to miss the race at the last minute, as he was confined to his bed by a nasty virus. Andrew Graham stepped up to replace Yves and did a fantastic job to help see Alinghi home. The rest of the crew were: Ernesto Bertarelli (Helm), Pierre-Yves Jorand (Mainsail), Nicolas Charbonnier (Tactician), Coraline Jonet (Trim) and Nils Frei (Trim). Next Saturday (the 13th), Alinghi will be lining up its Décision 35 SUI-1 Alinghi for the start of the 77th Bol d’Or Mirabaud, organised by Société Nautique de Genève and known as the largest race in closed waters, with more than 500 boats and 2,500 crew participating. Alinghi is one of the Bol d’Or’s most successful ever teams, having won the trophy in 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2011. That record makes Ernesto Bertarelli and Pierre-Yves Jorand members of a very select club of people who have won this prestigious trophy six times since the first edition in 1939. Alinghi’s crew for this year edition will be Ernesto Bertarelli (Helm), Pierre-Yves Jorand (Mainsail), Nicolas Charbonnier (Tactic), Coraline Jonet (Trim), Nils Frei (Trim) and Yves Detrey (Bow). Due to wind conditions that were uncertain to say the least – varying from incredibly light wind to the possibility of thunderstorms – all races were cancelled on Sunday, the 7th of May. Alinghi, therefore, maintains the second place position secured on the first day of racing, Friday. The very same position that the team is in the D35 Championship. Waiting for us is the Bol d’Or, coming up next weekend. Alinghi would like to send all of our best wishes to Nils for a swift recovery. We hope to have him aboard for next weekend’s classic.
After the storms and thunderstorms of last night on and around lake Geneva, the same was looking more like a mirror than anything else this morning. The team suffered from the absence of its trimmer Nils Frei who suffered from a knee infection that kept him on shore for the rest of the week-end. Called on last minute, long time team member Andrew Graham jumped on board after the doctors call to keep Nils at the very last minute. After a risky start towards the shores of "le Vengeron" Alinghi had to fight hard to stay in contact with the rest of the fleet. The Rolle marks proved to be a nightmare to turn, as there was literally no wind in front of the castle and the wine yards. Alinghi chose to return to Geneva sticking to the French coast, which proved to be the good option as the team managed to take over more than ten boats on the way back to Geneva finishing third of the D35 and 4th at the overall ranking. It's never over until it is over! A game of patience and passion for the whole crew on board who will start again racing tomorrow in Versoix for the second day of the Versoix GP II where they currently hold the second position. Today, despite some negative forecast, a maximum of 6 races were sailed. Alinghi started the day with a first place in race 1. For the rest of the day – consistency proved once more to be key to stay at the top of the leaderboard. After scoring, 1, 5, 4, 2, 4, (7 discard) Alinghi is 2nd after day 1, one point behind Tilt and 3 points ahead of Okalys. The Bullitt GC32 Racing Tour Alinghi, created by Ernesto Bertarelli, won the America’s Cup in 2003 in Auckland under the colors of the Société Nautique de Genève. In doing so, it set a double precedent in the history of the world’s oldest sports’ trophy: A first victory at a first attempt; and the first “European” team to bring the "Auld Mug" back to the continent since the first competition in 1851. On behalf of the Société Nautique de Genève, Alinghi then organised the 2007 America’s Cup in Valencia, fondly remembered as the best ever and at which Alinghi successfully defended its title in an epic battle on the water against Emirates Team New Zealand. However, despite Alinghi’s many successes in mono hull racing (Multi One Design, Farr 40, 12mJI, Corel 45, ACC), Ernesto Bertarelli has also been more than present on the multihull stage since 1993. It should come as no surprise then, that, with the creation of a new “flying” one-design catamaran class, Alinghi jumps at the opportunity to join this “foiling adventure”. The GC32 is a 10m, one-design catamaran, able to ‘fly’ with eight knots of True Wind Speed. This carbon dragonfly has already convinced the top-class sailors from across the sport of its pace, power and ability to ratchet up the excitement levels. Ernesto Bertarelli comments: “I have been enormously privileged to sail with some of my crew for more than 20 years. During the course of our adventures, our passion for the sport and for cutting-edge technology has been undimmed. It is therefore only natural that we would be eager to be involved with this evolution of our sport. Sailing in three dimensions will of course be a new challenge for all of us, but it is an exciting one and the opportunity to learn and then master a new type of boat is one that we couldn’t miss. The GC32, as with the D35 and the X40, is a strict one-design class. The same crew will compete on the Decision 35 circuit, albeit with the addition of Coraline Jonet (Trim) who will bring her many talents to the team of six that sail the D35. After all, what better source of inspiration for the team that is learning how to fly on the water in all four corners of Europe? Sailed in a breezy North East wind (La Bise) the 76th, Bol d’Or was won by LadyCat powered by Spindrift racing, Dona Bertarelli and her crew adding a second victory of this mythic regatta to her successes. Alinghi took third, after battling hard for more than 5 hours and 40 minutes, Realstone completing the podium in second. Started with an already established medium to strong “bise”, the regatta was promising to be intense. All the D35 started with a reef in their mainsail to sail up-wind towards le Bouveret. But the “Bise”, as expected, didn’t blow all the way to the Valais part of Lake Leman and a tactical war started at the approach of Lausanne, forcing the tactician to climb the mast to find some patches of wind on the suddenly calm waters ahead of SUI-1. LadyCat managed to come back to the top of the fleet and passed the Bouveret mark ahead of her opponents. The battle down wind back towards Geneva was intense and many teams went bow down in the waves more than once, pushing their machines to their limits! Alinghi crossed the finish line in 3rd position after 5 hours 42 minutes of an exciting race from the start to the end and stays in the lead of the Vulcain Trophy before the season’s summer break.
Alinghi wins the Geneva-Rolle-Geneva classic regatta after 4h52min of close combat against Realstone. The gun was fired at 13:00 in Vesenaz, in front of La Tour Carrée, by the Yacht Club of Geneva in very light wind conditions. Alinghi was in the leading group since the very beginning with some very close followers, Realstone and Zen too. After 3:15min of racing, Realstone passed the first mark in front of Rolle two boat lengths ahead of Alinghi, but after a successful jibe battle in front of the Ile de la Harpe, Alinghi was back in the leading position at the second mark located right in front of the Harbor of Rolle. A light breeze pushed then the D-35 fleet back towards Geneva, not far ahead of the first M2. Alinghi crossed the finish line first with Ernesto Bertarelli at the Helm, Nicolas Charbonnier at the Tactic, Pierre-Yves Jorand at the Mainsail, Coraline Jonet & Nils Frei at the Trim, Yves Detrey at the Bow. What better way for Team Principal and helmsman, Ernesto Bertarelli, to celebrate his birthday than by winning the 2013 Vulcain Trophy, wrapping up the prize at the penultimate event of the season – the Grand Prix Grange & Cie, organised and run with typical brilliance by the Yacht Club de Genève. A lack of wind unfortunately put pay to Sunday’s racing, but Saturday saw six races sailed, with the D35s entertaining an appreciative audience at the Geneva Yacht Club as the boats tussled for position. Despite having to abandon the first round due to technical problems it was ‘Ladycat powered by Spindrift racing’ who claimed first place at the Grand Prix, their first victory of the season. Alinghi ran them very close and saw off the challenge of Realstone to take second place and, with it, the championship. Speaking after the race, skipper Ernesto Bertarelli talked about his team’s fourth Vulcain Trophy: “I am delighted with this result. As a crew we have been solid all season and this victory is the culmination of a huge amount of teamwork and effort. The Vulcain Trophy – precisely because it is a one-design championship – is truly demanding, bringing together international teams of huge talent.
