podium

In Second, Alinghi takes stock of the 2021 TF35 Trophy

26 September, 2021

The seventh and last stage of the 2021 TF35 Trophy, the #2 Scarlino Grand Prix today marked the end of the very first season of this new class of foilers in Italy. Second behind Realteam, both this week and overall for the season, Ernesto Bertarelli's team ended this championship on two good notes: Alinghi won the first grand prix at the beginning of May, and won the season's last race. Spindrift made up the rest of the Grand Prix's podium and the TF35 Trophy. Ernesto Bertarelli: "It was another great weekend of competition. Spindrift has come a long way, but Realteam remains the team to beat. These boats are very demanding and it's positive to see the teams perform after such a short time on the TF35s. I look forward to welcoming an eighth crew next year. In a circuit of boats over 30 feet foiling upwind, racing with eight is already a substantial fleet and I think twelve would be the maximum. The boats will be improved by next year, which is why we have just decided not to race this winter in order to have time to work in the yard." Second behind the team to beat: Realteam! Jérôme Clerc and his team recorded an almost perfect score around the marks. Winner of four out of five Grand Prix this season, Realteam has set the bar high. Thanks to the team's work on shore and on the water, Alinghi fought to the end, but finished three points behind in the annual championship. Nils Frei: "The Realteam crew sailed very well all year. Solid, they had excellent starts and were very hard to pass. We have the potential to beat them and know what we must work on, but this year they were better! We had a lot of fun sailing here in Scarlino, although we are still in the development phase on the boat." A windy Grand Prix to close the season Six teams competed in Scarlino's second Grand Prix, with Zen Too unable to compete due to technical issues. The race committee was sensible and made reasoned decisions to preserve the boats. This Sunday, no race was launched because of wind that was too strong. Nicolas Charbonnier: "There is obviously some disappointment in finishing second, given we invested a lot of time and energy this season. We have been very consistent throughout the championship and will carefully analyse what we can improve upon to come back stronger next year, including manoeuvres, speed, starts, and tactics. It is the combination of a series of details that will make the difference." Positive results for the first season of TF35 After a short test event in 2020, the seven crews of the TF35 Trophy have raced as a fleet for real this season. And like any class launch, the progression curve is huge. Pierre-Yves Jorand: "It was a wonderful first season for the TF35! We had varied conditions on Lake Geneva and at sea, and the boats showed good performance. Even on the two long distance runs in light airs. Now it's time for the development of the flight software and sails, the reinforcement of certain parts and we are already delighted to see eight TF35s line up in the spring of 2022 with the arrival of an Italian team." Valuable learning for 2022 After five Grand Prix and two long distance races, the team members will take stock after the first 100% foiling season. Between the GC32 and TF35, it's been a year full of flying! It is now time for debriefing and to look to progress next year. Arnaud Psarofaghis: "We still have work to do to get a good handle on the boat, especially on-board operation and manoeuvring. By also improving the system and the software that control the foiling I think it will be possible to do a "dry lap" (doing the entire race while flying "dry" from start to finish, without even touching water in the manoeuvres. To this day, tacks are not foiling ones). This winter, we will continue to analyse our performance and that of our opponents. We will also try to simplify the processes as much as possible." Bryan Mettraux: "We have been very lucky with the weather conditions this season, from the training sessions in March before the first TF35 Trophy races, to these events at the Marina di Scarlino in Italy in open and salt water. It was very interesting to sail in the sea. These boats were designed primarily for light air on the lake, but future developments will make them more reliable even in medium wind and wave." David Niklès & João Cabeçadas: "This winter the class will make some changes to the foils, especially the flaps. In strong winds and waves, like here in Italy, they need to be reinforced. We will also work with the class on a number of other improvements. From Alinghi's perspective, while respecting the monotype rules of this class, we will also try to optimise our boat to be faster than our rivals!" A memory of this very first TF35 Trophy? Ernesto Bertarelli: "The successful launch of a class of boats that foil upwind and downwind and that can be steered by passionate sailing owners. Thrills are guaranteed and sailing is very likely to be challenging!" Florian Trüb: "The start of the Genève-Rolle-Genève, when we almost capsized a minute after crossing the line!" Nicolas Charbonnier: "When I was at the top of the mast to observe the wind during the Bol d'Or Mirabaud, and the boat started to foil. A first!" Arnaud Psarofaghis: "The progress that we will have made throughout this first season and the solutions found to accelerate this new class." Pierre-Yves Jorand + Nils Frei + Bryan Mettraux: "The arrival in the Bol d'Or Mirabaud at night, with the seven TF35s flying shoulder to shoulder around Yvoire in Geneva." While the TF35 returns to Switzerland for its winter break, there is still one event in the team's 2021 calendar: The last stage of the GC32 Racing Tour, in early November in San Pedro del Piñatar (Mar Menor, Spain). Summary of the rankings of the Grand Prix of Scarlino #2 after nine races (the worst score being withdrawn from four rounds validated): 1st - Realteam: 10 points 2nd - Alinghi: 18 points 3rd - Spindrift: 19 points ... GC32 vice-world champion, tied on points with Red Bull

19 September, 2021

Reigning world champion, Alinghi finished second at the GC32 Worlds in Villasimius, Italy. Tied on points with Red Bull Sailing Team after 14 races, the rule says the one finishing before the other in the last race ends up in front overall. The team had an excellent last day but broke its starboard foil two-thirds of the way into the last race. The hazards of motor sports! The double Olympic champions Hagara / Steinacher won gold while a second Swiss team, Team Tilt (Sébastien Schneiter), completed the podium. Alinghi continues to lead the annual "GC32 Racing Tour" Championship. Arnaud Psarofaghis: "We had everything to play for until the last day, it was an exciting world championship! The world title didn't escape us only on the last round, though. We lacked consistency this week. We lost too many points in the first few days in situations that could have been avoided. Today we raced really well to make up the gap, then take the lead before the last race and I'm really happy with the performance on board. Congratulations to Roman, Hans Peter and all their team, it was a pleasure to race against them!" Varied and complicated conditions Eight teams competed in fourteen races in Sardinia in mixed conditions during the four days of competition. Very light breeze and rain played the spoilsport during the first two days, with respectively one and three races validated. On Saturday and Sunday, the 32-foot foilers were finally able to complete the full programme by lining up for ten races in magnificent conditions. Timothé Lapauw: "We had a very good last day. In strong air we have good speed and efficient manoeuvres. The wind was very variable the first two days, which made it difficult on board. The race patterns were not clear and the strategy difficult to establish." The comeback Helmed by Arnaud Psarofaghis, Alinghi were seven points behind the leaders entering into the last day of competition. With three wins and a second place, the reigning world champions made a magnificent comeback this Sunday, September 19, to finish tied on points with Red Bull. Nicolas Charbonnier: "We have sailed among a fleet of eight boats here compared to six in the other races this season. It's still a small fleet, but it's always interesting the more numerous it is. The classification was really tight, unlike the other GC32 races this season. We had fewer good days during these Worlds, but reacted very well and are very happy to end on such a good day. Despite the damage..." Unfortunate foil damage in the last race A mechanical sport like competitive sailing generates its share of complications, sometimes beyond the control of the team members. Alinghi paid the price in the last race of this championship. With the team heading for overall victory by sailing at the head of the fleet and having started race 14 with three points lead on Red Bull, the team's starboard foil (the right part allowing the raising of the boat above the water) broke into two pieces. Bryan Mettraux: "Every year, at the start of the season, we do NDT (non-destructive testing), an ultrasound of all the carbon parts - the hulls, foils, beams and mast. This scanner allows us to check the state of wear of the boat, to identify and repair any initial cracks. We did not observe anything during the last scan and no signs of wear have been visible to the naked eye since, unlike a rope or block, which show weaknesses visually." A first victory for Red Bull The third of the four stages of the 2021 season, the Villasimius Cup, which also served as the World Championship, is won by Red Bull. The Austrians even sign for their very first victory since arriving on the circuit! The owner-helmsman classification (Owner Driver Trophy) goes to Erik Maris (Zoulou). Yves Detrey: "Red Bull sailed well all week, while our first races were more complicated. We are obviously disappointed to have suffered this foil breakage in the last race and not to have been able to fight to the end. In the history of the GC32 fleet, this is the first time that a foil has broken like this." Still leading the GC32 Racing Tour 2021 After three stages of the annual championship, Alinghi maintains the lead in the general classification, three points ahead of Red Bull. The team will stay in Italy and return to Scarlino for the last TF35 event of the season, September 23-26. As for the GC32 Racing Tour, the fourth and final stage of the season will be held in early November in San Pedro del Piñatar (Mar Menor), Spain. General classification after 14 races - GC32 World Championship and Villasimius Cup (3rd round of the annual championship) 1st - Red Bull Sailing Team: 43 points 2nd - Alinghi: 43 points 3rd - Team Tilt: 50 points 4th - Black Star Sailing Team: 51 points 5th - Team Rockwool racing: 58 points 6th - Zoulou: 60 points 7th - Argo: 90 points 8th - Swiss Foiling Academy: 109 points Extract from the provisional general classification of the GC32 Racing Tour after three races 1st - Alinghi: 4 points 2nd - Red Bull Sailing Team: 7 points 3rd - Black Star Sailing Team: 9 points Click here for the full results. Second and one point from TF35 victory at Scarlino

12 September, 2021

The seven TF35s embraced salt water all together for the first time in their careers this week. The fleet migrated to the Italian town of Scarlino, in Tuscany, for the last two Grand Prix of the 2021 TF35 Trophy. A four-day regatta in lovely conditions made possible twelve races, at the end of which Alinghi finished second, just one point behind winner Realteam. Spindrift completed the podium. Ernesto Bertarelli: "We had a lot of fun sailing here at Scarlino, with exemplary hospitality and organisation. The conditions were perfect, the TF35 reacted well at sea and we are going to work on some improvements to be made. Congratulations to Realteam, who sailed very well and fully deserves the victory. It was a pleasure to race against them!" Finally at sea! After five stages on Lake Geneva, the TF35 Trophy crews were able to test their foilers in competition mode in salt water. There were little differences to be found with sailing on the lake, thanks in particular to ideal wind and sea conditions all week. Yves Detrey: "We didn't change our methods in relation to how we sailed on Lake Geneva - salt water does not influence foiling, or if it does only in an infinitesimal way. The main difference was that it was a bit windier than our first regattas on the lake. And the small waves reminded us that we were at sea! The damage to our two rudders yesterday cost us a few points, with the flaps having torn off (rear part of the rudder foil, which is angled). But that doesn't detract from Realteam's performance, of course!" A tight ranking to the end at the top of the table Only one point behind Realteam at the end of each day, Alinghi fought until the last. Jérôme Clerc and his team gave the team a hard time! After the first three races of Day 2, which were won by Spindrift, the three boats were tied even. Arnaud Psarofaghis: "We only had one day of training with the full crew before this Grand Prix and hadn't sailed the TF35 since the Bol d'Or Mirabaud, so we're happy with our result. We made some small mistakes, especially in some strategic and tactical choices. Realteam sailed better in all conditions and made fewer mistakes than us. To date, two groups of competitors have been identified within the fleet. The difference is probably due to the number of days training. The leading teams also experienced less crew changes and we may have understood better how this new foiler works." Ideal conditions Installed for two weeks in Scarlino, where the last stage of the season will also be held in two weeks, the TF35 Trophy teams have benefited from dream-like conditions. Nicolas Charbonnier: "The wind was more stable than on the Lake, which created less difference between the boats. It was very tight and interesting! The duel with Realteam was intense. Finishing just one point away from them each evening and after four days illustrates this perfectly." Everything to play for in the final Now two points ahead of Alinghi, Realteam maintains its lead in the overall championship standings. The goal in the final in two weeks will be to finish ahead of them. Mathematically, it will also be necessary for a boat to come between the two rivals for a victory in the championship to be possible. There are lots of unknowns, but one thing is certain: the whole team is looking forward to returning to Scarlino for the final! Before that, the direction now is Villasimius for the GC32 World Championship and the defence of the title won in 2019. The team has already taken off for Sardinia. The scheduled four-day regatta will start on Thursday September 16th. Extract from the ranking of the Scarlino Grand Prix # 1 after 12 races (the worst score being withdrawn from four validated rounds): 1st - Realteam: 19 points 2nd - Alinghi: 20 points 3rd - Spindrift: 28 points ... A tale of two – but not quite just that…!

7 June, 2021

We could have summed up Alinghi's last three days in a short sentence: two events in one weekend, two second places. But such a review would be incomplete without detailing the very first long classic race involving the TF35s (and won by a TF35) and the wild scenes produced shortly after the start of the Genève-Rolle-Genève. It would also be remiss not to mention the remarkable performance of Arnaud Psarofaghis, who took part as interim skipper of the New Zealand team engaged on the international SailGP circuit. After only a few hours of getting to grips with the 50-foot foiler, our co-skipper made a promising start in Italy and led their team to the gates of the final. But first, let's come back to Switzerland with Yves Detrey for the 3rd grand prix of the season, run over two days because of the Genève-Rolle on Saturday: "After taking the advantage in the five races on Friday, we are a little disappointed with our performance this Sunday. The wind was not as forecast and only allowed for two races, where we keep making mistakes. "Finishing 2nd in a grand prix is not the result we are aiming for, but day after day the general level of the fleet is rising. There are very good sailors on board each boat, who know how to take advantage of sailing alongside Realteam and us, who had a small lead. One thing is certain: it will be tough until the end of the season." Realteam wins this stage, Zoulou takes 3rd place. Florian Trüb: "It's great to be on board the TF35 in competition. We did our best in this new configuration without Arnaud. The conditions were not easy, especially on Saturday during the long race with small clouds of rain randomly bringing wind from the right and left. Anyway, it's good to be back on a foiler!" He continues about the "cold sweats" episode: "Just after the start of the Genève-Rolle, we suffered a big gust that surprised us with its strength. At that precise moment, there were four of us in the middle of the boat to furl the gennaker. We quickly climbed the nets to counterbalance! It was hot and we narrowly avoided capsizing the boat." Photo and video report on our social networks... Bryan Mettraux continues, talking about the key moments in this 56th Genève-Rolle-Genève: "We waited quite a bit for the expected wind, especially on the outward journey. There wasn't much of a gap at the beginning. With the wind coming in from behind, the TF35, D35 and M2 were fairly aligned. "We rounded Rolle's mark in 2nd position, 20 seconds behind Realteam. At the end of Rolle, we sailed really well and we took the lead. Then it became impossible for us to control all our competitors, and the width of the lake gives the teams many options! Ylliam and Zoulou (even though Zoulou were last at the Rolle mark) passed us by. We regained ground over the last two miles and we managed to gain a place to finish 2nd. Obviously, we would have preferred to win, but we are happy with this result and the way the boat behaved against the D35 in light winds." Zoulou, led by Erik Maris, signs for a nice victory, Spindrift completes the podium, while Realteam, our direct competitor, finished 6th. Note that the rankings of the two major races (Genève-Rolle and the Bol d'Or) will be added together to count as a single race. The result at the Bol d'Or will act as a decider in the event of a tie. We will therefore have to wait another week for the announcement of the provisional general classification for the first part of the season. See you at 10am on Saturday June 12 for the start of the 82nd Bol d'or Mirabaud! 2nd spot in the second TF35 Grand Prix

17 May, 2021

Nils Frei: "These seven races of the season's second TF35 Grand Prix were interesting because provide a balance to those run two weeks ago. We had more wind, more situations where the boats were close, "hot" decisions that had to be made. Sometimes everything went well, but we also made mistakes that we need to analyse for the future. We are a little disappointed with some errors that could have been avoided, but this is only the second time that we have all come together in competition and the other teams are pushing hard." Nicolas Charbonnier: "In these conditions, with wind above 15 knots and most races foiling in the air from start to finish, the whole fleet still has a lot to learn, even if some are already doing manoeuvres without putting their hulls in the water. Our second place can be explained by a few mistakes here and there, but also by the fact that Realteam sailed well. They deserve this victory and we will continue to work!" Bryan Mettraux: "We continued to learn more during this rather windy weekend. We had difficulty sometimes finding stability downwind, but we will work on this point in training. "In just under three weeks, we'll be running two events in three days: a Grand Prix interspersed with the Genève-Rolle-Genève on Saturday. But in terms of approach, we will separate these two events because the modes of sailing will be very different. On a long-distance race, you have to succeed in making the boat go quickly on a given heading, and depending on the weather and the angle to the wind, choose to make it foil or keep it in the water, for example. In any case, we are delighted to enter our TF35 in this first Lake Geneva classic." The team would like to thank the Société Nautique de Nyon and its volunteers, in collaboration with the TF35 class and the authorities, for making this event possible, while respecting public health rules. Join the seven TF35 Trophy teams from June 4 to 6 for the Grand Prix de Mies (Friday and Sunday) and the Genève-Rolle-Genève (Saturday). Oman Air a touch above the rest; Alinghi 2nd

4 August, 2019

132 boats spread over four race areas, 26 nationalities and some 1,500 sailors came together in Palma de Mallorca for the traditional Copa del Rey, the 38th of its name. The 3rd stage of the GC32 Racing Tour circuit coincides with this great event and is an exception in the tour's annual calendar, given that the boats joined 10 other classes for a regatta put on by the well-oiled organisation over the course of the week. As usual, the Bay of Palma delivered very good sailing conditions and all 20 races on the GC32 programme were run. This time, it was Oman Air which showed greatest consistency and control of the foiling monotype catamaran. The battle between the two leaders raged to the end and, mathematically, the final result was not certain until the last race. But Oman Air did hold firm and won the last two rounds of the day, bringing their total to ten wins from 20, with Alinghi registering seven. And so five small points separated the two rivals after four days of fleet racing...and some phases of match racing (fans of our Instagram stories will be able to identify the moments ;-). Yves Detrey, bowman: "It was a great last day of racing against Oman Air. They were trying to make us lose ground when they were in front, and we did the same when we were in the lead. "As for the final result, we can only blame ourselves for not having sailed very well the first two days. In a small fleet, if you want to win, you have to race well from beginning to end. "Oman Air did it. They win, it's deserved. "I think we cannot always win when we compete. But you have to know how to stay on the lookout for the next event and keep learning. In Riva in September, there is no question of attacking Oman from the beginning. We will sail our modes, apply our manoeuvres and unfold our game as we did in the World Championship, and everything will be fine." Pierre-Yves Jorand, Team Director: "Oman Air delivered a very complete game in terms of performance, manoeuvres, strategy and also on the starts throughout these 20 races with varied conditions. "On our side, we sailed a little below our level. We are not looking for excuses, though we have had a busy start to the season, not least with the World Championship, which was a big goal for us. I would also say that arriving in Palma with a slightly smaller fleet (six boats instead of 10), made a difference, removing a little of the extra spice and it does not take much in that scenario for the game to tighten. Indeed, we made some small positioning errors on the first day, we were less incisive than Oman in key moments like starts and we had trouble finding stability on the second day in choppy water. "We know what we must do to win next. We have the solutions. It's up to us to apply them and deliver a better result over four days in a row." Is it possible to win each regatta? "In high-level mechanical sports, it seems difficult. Sailing is a mechanical sport and a team sport. It takes individual performance, that each team member is at his best, and that they interact perfectly, that everyone is in the same dynamic. "I think that Oman worked a lot after Lagos (note: they finished 5th in the Worlds, a real under-performance for such a great team). They learnt from our manoeuvres, studied our game and came here a bit stronger. As in any high-level sport, a little improvement can be enough to pass the shoulder of your rival. "But let's be careful, I do not see any revolution to apply between here and Lake Garda. We will simply have to succeed in bringing our best game, as we did in five stages last year and as in Lagos a month ago."   After three events and following their victory, Oman Air sits alongside the top of the tour's overall standings with five points. Could this be a harbinger for other match racing sequences between us two in the last two stages of the season?! Red Bull follows with 12 points. From today (and once the GC32 is in its container), the team will head to Switzerland to help prepare the very first TF35, freshly arrived at Société Nautique de Genève. The first test sailings are expected by mid-August. From August 30th to September 1st, the 5th D35 Trophy will be organized by the Yacht Club de Genève. 81st Bol d'Or: dantesque conditions and a 3rd place overall

16 June, 2019

57 knots were displayed on the boat's instruments! Not for the speed of our D35, but for the wind speed that blew during the ferocious storm that rained down during the 81st Bol d'Or. We spare a thought to the competitors who suffered damage to their boats, and also to the rescue teams and volunteers on the ground. While the record for this legendary event remains at 5: 01'50 '' (Triga IV in 1994), the M1 Ladycat powered by Spindrift managed the calm before and after the storm, winning the race in 10 hours, 36 minutes and 21 seconds. Ylliam-Comptoir Immobilier were the first D35 and second overall in 10h39'38', the Alinghi D35 completed the podium with a time of 10h42'35. Nicolas Charbonnier, tactician: "This year, I will remember above all the incredible storm that we had to cross. It was a hell of an experience, like nothing I've been through on a boat. We congratulate Spindrift for their victory and we are happy to make the podium." Arnaud Psarofaghis, mainsail trimmer: "What is striking in these great races is that the regattas are even tighter than the Grand Prix. From beginning to end, we fight for every metre, every place. Relative to the length of the course, we finish much closer to each other than at the finish of a Grand Prix round, which is surprising after more than 10 hours of non-stop racing." Nils Frei, coach: "It was super impressive to see the lake transformed with more than 50 knots of wind. Rare conditions, fortunately, by the way. There were boats in stress everywhere and many flares launched. "Ladycat led the race well and deserves the victory, but we are happy to have sailed well overall. The start and first section of the race were very good. Then the wind transitions bunched us up. It was complicated when the Bouveret approached, where it was very quiet and therefore more random. On the way back to Geneva, we negotiated the storm rather well, even though the jib did not come out unscathed. We moved back on the leader who was 50 minutes ahead of us at Bouveret, but that will not have been enough. Achieving the podium on a long race is always satisfying, even if we would prefer to win!" After this fourth stage of the D35 Trophy 2019, Alinghi still leads the Championship, ahead of Ylliam-Comptoir Immobilier and Zen Too. For the D35s, a summer break will now take place until the end of August, when they will return for three Grand Prix to end the season. In the meantime, the team is looking forward to seeing you from June 27th to 30th in Lagos (Portugal) for one of its major goals: the GC32 Series World Championship.
